- As viagens de Paulo V : heterotopia, propagação e ubiquidadePublication . Ribeiro, Jorge Henrique Antunes Vieira; Queiroz, João Paulo, 1966-As viagens de Paulo V. - Heterotopia, Propagação e Ubiquidade, consists in a theoretical and practical dissertation that has as its starting point the practice of amateur radio developed by Paulo V. - nuclear character of this reflection - activity to which he devoted himself for four decades, resulting in an extensive and diverse collection of elements. The questioning about the motivation of this practice, as well as the relevance of their relationship in an artistic context, conducted this research to Michel Foucault and his concept of heterotopia in which this reflects about the space and time in contemporary times, an issue that is developed in the chapter dedicated to theoretical framework. Thus, from this concept, the bridge is created for the thought of Jorge Luis Borges, establishing the basis of his recurring themes - eternity and infinity - an idea of propagation and ubiquity of the subject, relating these concepts to the practice of amateur radio. In order to frame the time when this activity had its golden age, it is observed the change that Futurism brought to the art scene at the beginning of the 20th century, setting forth the emerging appetite for progress. Subsequently, is identified the relation that this avant-garde movement had with Russian Constructivism, being visible the influence, at a plastic level, between the graphic and typographic paradigm by the artists linked to this movement, and the elements resulting from the amateur radio activity. This chapter concludes with some examples of artwork, identifying relationships of proximity between these authors and the core concepts of this dissertation. The last part of this document is devoted to the presentation of the authorial practical project, divided into two parts, each containing several pieces of diverse nature, contemplating the practices of photography, video, drawing and installation, called CT1LN
Jordão, Tiago Lehuby, 1985-; Queiroz, João Paulo, 1966-We reflect upon our audiovisual approach to material imagination from a thematic, conceptual and instrumental standpoint: we demarcate and present our topic in the way it was developed by Gaston Bachelard in his studies about imagination; we follow José Gil’s theory of the naked-image in order to set a conceptual basis for the nature of the artistic (plastic) image; we expound Gilles Deleuze’s idea of an image-affection so we may develop our investigation on the actual field of the audiovisuals. With this mind-set, we then analyse our practical work through the exploration of questions such as the relations between words and images, the expressiveness of the audiovisuals and the means which may enable it: framing, zooming, super-positioning and suggesting through sound
- Combined impacts of climate and socio-economic scenarios on irrigation water availability for a dry Mediterranean reservoirPublication . Nunes, João Pedro; Jacinto, Rita; Keizer, JacobThe impacts of climate and associated socio-economic changes on water availability, including supply and demand, quality, and storage volume, were evaluated for the Vale do Gaio reservoir in southern Portugal, located in a dry Mediterranean climate and already under drought stress. The SWAT model was applied with 6 scenarios for 2071-2100, involving two storylines (A1B and B1) with individual changes in climate (-9% rainfall, increasing in winter by +28 to +30%), socio-economic conditions (an increase in irrigation demand by 11%, and a replacement of cereals and pastures by sunflower), and a combination of both. Most future scenarios resulted in lower water availability, due to lower supply (-19 to -27%) combined with higher irrigation demand (+3 to +21%). This resulted in more years with limited irrigation supplies (presently: 28%; scenarios: 37 to 43%), although limitations were mitigated by lower losses to excess discharge. Land-use changes also decreased quality by increasing P concentrations (+29 to +93%). Impacts were more severe in scenario A1B than in B1, and in combined changes than in climate or socio-economic changes only. Water availability was resilient to climate change, as impacts led only to a moderate aggravation of present-day conditions. Lower future water availability could be addressed by supply and demand management strategies and, in the most extreme scenario, by water transfers from regional water reserves; water quality issues could be addressed through land-use policies. Results also highlighted the importance of taking the characteristics of water supply systems into account when designing adaptation measures for future changes.
- Understanding the First Chalcolithic Communities of Estremadura: Zooarchaeology of Castro de Chibanes, Portugal. Preliminary ResultsPublication . Pereira, Vera; Soares, Joaquina; Silva, Carlos Tavares daThis study integrates archaeological, zooarchaeological and taphonomic results from the Chalcolithic, the earliest chronological period from the excavations at Castro de Chibanes (Palmela, Portugal). Preliminary results from the “Horizonte IA” (Phase IA1 and IA2), regarding the first half of the 3rd millennium BC will be presented. The faunal assemblage consists of a total of 858 remains. These predominantly comprise of domestic mammals – particularly pigs, sheep and goats – which are interpreted as food supply. With low percentages of wild game, animal husbandry emerges as a central activity for these populations, complimented by marine fishing. In addition, small game hunting – mainly of lagomorphs and a few birds – is also identified. As at other archaeological sites in the region, the material culture suggests that Castro de Chibanes can be ascribed to the cultural domain of the pre-Bell Beaker Chalcolithic of Estremadura. Particularly comparative sites include Leceia, Zambujal and Penedo do Lexim, also fortified settlements with high rates of domestic livestock (suids and caprines) and extremely low percentages of wild game, in particular red deer.
