- Across-the-Board Clitic Placement in Romance LanguagesPublication . Matos, GabrielaStudies on clitics emphasise that Across-the-Board (ATB) clitic placement is licensed only by proclitic pronouns and exhibits a different ehabiour across Romance in what concerns its availability as a regular syntactic construction. Current proposals treat these properties either as the result of the LCA and the special status of clitics as parasitics gaps identifiers in some languages (Kayne 1994), or as the consequence of the projection of a fnctional category above the coordinate structure, where the clitic may remain stranded (Rouveret 1992, Uriagereka 1995). Departing from these analyses, I will laim that ATB clitic placement is not restricted to proclisis and may arise whenever the clitic has scope over the arguments it is related with in each conjunct. I will also argue that the different behaviour of ATB clitic placement in Romance must be entirely imputed to the status of the clitics as autonoous vs. non-autonomous syntatic heads, as well as tothe strategies potentially availabe in each language for evidencing the coordinate stricutire as a unite the overt clitic has scope over.
- Appositive sentences and the structure(s) of coordinationPublication . Matos, GabrielaCoordination is not a unitary phenomenon: as far as binding and scope of external elements are concerned, appositive coordinate sentences may differ from their non-appositive integrated counterparts in the same way as appositive relatives differ from restrictive relaties, suggesting that different configurations are involved in appositive vs. non-appositive sentences. The Set-Merge (Kayne 1994) and Pair Merge (Munn 1992) proposals for dealing with coordination, although relevant, are not enough to distinguish appositive from non-appositive sentences. The crucial distinguishing property of appositives is their parenthetical status: they are adjuntcts affected by a feature specifying their parenthetical nature. This allows the computational system, which operates bottom up and according to an Earlines Condition (Pesetsky 1989, Chomsky 2001), to interpret them as autonomous CP phases, to be transferred to the Interface components before the phases they are inserted in, thus prventing c-command effects from external elements at SEM.
- Comitative Coordination in CapeverdeanPublication . Brito, José António; Matos, Gabriela; Pratas, FernandaComitative coordination in Capevedean, a Portuguese-based Creole language, differs from comitative coordination in Portuguese and other European languages by the wider range of syntactic categories it conjoins and its insensitivity to the lexical-semantic selection of the main verb. In this respect Capeverdean behaves like with-languages. However, the comitative conjunction ku may not coordinate adjectival or tensed verbal predicates, as well as finite sentences. In this paper it is claimed that the widespread occurrence of ku in Capeverdean is due to its full grammaticalized status as a conjunction, and its impossibility to conjoin predicates and tensed domains is imputed to its comitative meaning: ku conjoins referential arguments or properties to derive a group entity or a compound property; it is excluded from contexts that denote related but independent properties or events and situations.

- Comparative clauses and cross linguistic variation : a syntactic approach.Publication . Matos, Gabriela; Brito, Ana
- Consecutive clauses in European Portuguese: a syntactic approachPublication . Brito, Ana Maria; Matos, GabrielaConsecutive clauses exhibit syntactic properties that in several respects remain relatively unknown. Assuming the current generative framework, we will analyse two main types of consecutives, mainly focussing on European Portuguese.
Canceiro, Nádia; Matos, Gabriela; Colaço, MadalenaEuropean Portuguese nem corresponds to two different categories, a coordenative conjunction and a negative non-conjunctional element that in some contexts assumes a scalar meaning. We will show that, although both of these homonymous particles necessarily occur in negative domains, they have a different syntactic distribution and display specific properties. Focusing on coordenative nem in correlative and the non-correlative constructions, we will propose an account of their licensing conditions in integrated and parenthetical coordinate structures.
