- Os adolescentes portugueses dormem pouco e bem, ou pouco e mal? E então?Publication . Matos, Margarida Gaspar de; Gaspar, Tania; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Branquinho, Cátia Sofia dos Santos; Cerqueira, Ana; Marques, Adilson; Simões, Celeste; Tomé, Gina; Gómez-Baya, Diego; Paiva, TeresaThe objective of this study is to analyse the characteristics of the sleep of young people and their role in the perception of health, satisfaction with life, pressure with school work and school competence. A total of 5695 Portuguese adolescents were included in the study of Health Behaviour in School aged Children (HBSC) (46.1% boys), 8th, 10th and 12th grades in Portugal. We identified associations between all variables related to sleep quality and physical and psychological well-being, as well as the online contact with the close friends and satisfaction with the life of the young people. Variables related to disturbed sleep indicate that the majority of adolescents show a pattern of late sleep and reduced sleep duration at a stage of life where it is fundamental to the good performance of the daily activities of young people related to their school activities and social. The quality and quantity of sleep, as well as its consequences, have been aggravated by the often problematic use of screens, an increasingly salient and focused problem, and with worries that adolescents refer and can not manage.
- Os adolescentes portugueses e a igualdade de oportunidades dos migrantesPublication . Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Gaspar, Tania; Tomé, Gina; Cerqueira, Ana; Matos, Margarida Gaspar deUnderstanding the equal opportunities of immigrants as one of the fundamental humanity rights, migrant populations have been especially prominent, being present in various social and political discussions. The objective of the study was to analyse the characteristics of adolescents who express a more positive attitude towards cultural diversity. A total of 5695 Portuguese adolescents (46.1% boys) participated in the study, from the 8th, 10th and 12th grades, in Portugal. The sample was collected as part of the Health Behaviour in School aged Children (HBSC) study. Gender differences have been identified, being females and adolescents who meet non-Portuguese youth who have a more positive connection with equal opportunities for immigrants. Age and curiosity about meeting people from other places also have an explanatory value of equal opportunities. The variables related to cultural diversity and well-being help to better explain the perception of the equality of opportunities of migrants in the eyes of Portuguese adolescents, however it is the youngest and the women who present a more positive perception. Development of actions to encourage the valorisation of diversity and the promotion of common activities is necessary, emphasizing the promotion of other personal and/or social-emotional competences in promoting well-being and social cohesion.
- O bem-estar e a saúde mental dos adolescentes portuguesesPublication . Gaspar, Tania; Tomé, Gina; Gómez-Baya, Diego; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Cerqueira, Ana; coelho, António borges; Matos, Margarida Gaspar deThe objective of this study was to analyze the mental health and quality of life of Portuguese adolescents. A total of 8215 Portuguese adolescents (52.7% girls) attending the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades in Portugal were included in the Health Behavior in School aged Children (HBSC) study. Adolescents were asked about their quality of life and aspects related to their mental health. The psychological variables related to mental health have a high explanatory value of quality of life and subjective well-being. Gender and school year differences were identified, with girls and older adolescents showing more mental health related risk factors. Anxiety and stress, physical and psychological symptoms, worries, depressive symptoms, the perception of happiness and quality of life are important factors for understanding and characterizing the mental health of adolescents. The development of socio-emotional and interpersonal relationships skills are factors related to protection in the mental health and quality of life of adolescents.
- A biopsychosocial and environmental perspective of youth health literacy in PortugalPublication . Gaspar, Tania; Arriaga, Miguel; Carvalho, Marina; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Cerqueira, Ana; Matos, Margarida Gaspar deBackground: From a biopsychosocial perspective, health literacy is a key factor for healthy development and the development of more comprehensive interventions directed at health literacy determinants. The present study had the main goal of studying demographic, individual, social, and contextual variables related to health literacy in adolescents. Methods: The data used in this study are part of the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) 2022 survey. The study included 7649 adolescents, 53.9% (n = 3961) female, with an average age of 15.05 years (SD = 2.36), in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades, proportionally distributed across the five regions of the Portuguese mainland. Results: Health literacy was explained by factors related to physical, psychological, social, and environmental health. The factors with the higher explanatory value were the psychological variables, followed by social and lifestyle-related variables. Sociodemographic and environmental factors had a more modest explanatory value. These results point to the complexity of adolescents' health literacy. Conclusions: These results are of the utmost importance for educators, professionals, and policymakers who can use this information to create friendly environments that promote health literacy and health-promoting activities according to a multidisciplinary, continuous, and consistent plan.
- Chronic conditions and school participation of first-year university students — HOUSE ULisbon studyPublication . Cerqueira, Ana; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Marques-Pinto, Alexandra; Branco, Amélia; Galvão, Cecília; Sousa, Joana; Goulão, Luis F.; Bronze, Maria Rosário; Viegas, Wanda; Gaspar, TaniaStudents with chronic conditions (CC) tend to experience several barriers in terms of their school participation and performance. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the factors related to the time of diagnosis of CC (recent/non-recent), the barriers to participation and academic success (health condition, people’s attitude towards CC and school physical environment), the physical and mental health (physical/psychological symptoms and concerns) and school-related variables (relationship with teachers and peers), regarding the school participation of first-year students with CC. This work is part of the HOUSE-Colégio F3 Project, University of Lisbon, which includes 1143 first-year university students from 17 Faculties and Institutes of the University of Lisbon. In this specific study, only the subsample of 207 students with CC was considered, 72.4% of which were female, aged between 18 and 54 years (M = 20.00; SD = 4.83). The results showed that students with a recent diagnosis of CC and students with school participation affected by the CC were those who presented more negative indicators regarding barriers to school participation, physical and mental health, and school-related variables. A greater impact of CC in terms of school participation was associated with having a recent diagnosis, with people’s attitude towards CC and with the health condition as barriers, with more psychological symptoms and worse relationships with teachers and peers. This is a relevant message for the organization of health services for students with CC at the beginning of their university studies, especially since they are often displaced from home and managing their health conditions alone (in many cases, for the first time).

- Como passam os adolescentes que vivem com doença crónica na escola, na família e com os amigos?Publication . Gaspar, Tania; Tomé, Gina; Gaspar, Susana; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Cerqueira, Ana; Matos, Margarida Gaspar deThe objective of this study was to analyze the quality of life of Portuguese adolescents and to verity the impact of having a chronic health condition, namely with impact on the participation on school, family and social life (peers and leisure). A total of 8215 Portuguese adolescents (53.9% girls) attending the 8th, 10th and 12th grades in Portugal were included in the Health Behavior in School aged Children (HBSC) study. Adolescents were asked about their quality of life and aspects related to the existence of physical and psychological symptoms, as well as if the chronic health condition has impact on the participation on school, family and social life (peers and leisure). Adolescents with chronic health conditions present significantly more physical and psychological symptoms and less perceived quality of life. Controlling gender and age, the existence of physical or psychological symptoms has a negative impact on the perception of quality of life. This relationship is stronger when adolescents report having a chronic health condition with an impact on participation and attendance at school, in the family or at leisure. The difficulty of participation in the family is the one that adds more explanatory value. These results suggest that, in relation to adolescents with chronic health conditions, intervention efforts should focus on ensuring their social and affective participation in the family, school and at leisure with the peer group.
- COVID-19 and Lockdown, as Lived and Felt by University StudentsPublication . Branquinho, Cátia; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Cerqueira, Ana; Marques-Pinto, Alexandra; Branco, Amélia; Galvão, Cecília; Sousa, Joana; Goulao, Luis; Bronze, Maria Rosário; Viegas, Wanda; Matos, Margarida GasparIn the last 2 years, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread all over the world, forcing the closure of universities, among other unusual measures in recent history. (1) Background: This work is based on the study HOUSE-ULisbon, a survey carried out during the second confinement (March–May 2021) in Portugal with the collaboration of all the Faculties of the University of Lisbon (UL). The present work aims to explore gender differences in how first-year college students experienced and felt COVID-19 and the second confinement. (2) Methods: A questionnaire was carried out. In total, 976 university students (19.66 years (SD = 4.033); Min = 17 and Max = 65) from the first year of the UL were included, of which 69.5% (n = 678) were female, and 30.5% were male (n = 298). SPSS v. 26 was used for quantitative data and MAXQDA 2020 for qualitative data. (3) Results: Overall, students reported various symptoms of physical and mental discomfort (especially females). Statistically significant differences were found in the problems that could arise from the pandemic, such as the prevalence of higher anxiety and worries by females, and online gaming by males. In coping strategies, differences were found in leisure and family relationships, with greater difficulty on the female side. Social interaction was perceived as difficult or very difficult by both genders. As strategies for future pandemics, they highlighted a concerted effort between the government and media in the transmission of messages to the population, facilitating information, knowledge and adoption of protective behaviors. (4) Conclusions: These results are important data for activating or maintaining resources and services for first-year university students, who in some university institutions were supported during the pandemic by psychological, material (e.g., computers, internet), and financial support measures, which are now diminished or extinct. The impacts on their lives will certainly not be extinguished post-pandemic, and health, education, and public policy measures should be prioritized for this group. These results are important data for activating resources and services for students, informing health and education professionals, and supporting public policies
