- An evaluation of the role of statistical measures and frequency for MWE identificationPublication . Antunes, Sandra; Mendes, AmáliaWe report on an experiment to evaluate the role of statistical association measures and frequency for the identification of MWE. We base our evaluation on a lexicon of 14.000 MWE comprising different types of word combinations: collocations, nominal compounds, light verbs + predicate, idioms, etc. These MWE were manually validated from a list of n-grams extracted from a 50 million word corpus of Portuguese (a subcorpus of the Reference Corpus of Contemporary Portuguese), using several criteria: syntactic fixedness, idiomaticity, frequency and Mutual Information measure, although no threshold was established, either in terms of group frequency or MI. We report on MWE that were selected on the basis of their syntactic and semantics properties while the MI or both the MI and the frequency show low values, which would constitute difficult cases to establish a cutting point. We analyze the MI values of the MWE selected in our gold dataset and, for some specific cases, compare these values with two other statistical measures.
- Antibiotic Consumption, Illness, and Maternal Sensitivity in Infants with a Disorganized AttachmentPublication . Ambivalent-attached infants are more likely to take antibiotics than other infants, and their mothers tend to be less sensitive to their needs than most. This finding is important because it shows the association between psychological processes, early relationships, and health outcomes. We aim to learn about children with high-risk attachment relationships, such as disorganized-attached infants. This study compares antibiotic use, infant–mother interactive behavior, and health indicators according to infant attachment patterns (including disorganized attachment). For this purpose, we observed mothers–infants’ interactive behavior in free play at nine months and infants’ attachment in the Ainsworth Strange Situation at twelve months. Participants included 77 girls and 104 boys (full-term and preterm) and their mothers. Paradoxically, mothers of disorganized-attached infants reported that their children were ill only 1.56 times on average, but 61% of their children used antibiotics in the first nine months. The other mothers reported that their children were sick 5.73 times on average, but only 54% of their children used antibiotics in the same period. Infants with disorganized attachment had mothers who were more literate and less sensitive. These results add to a body of research that shows that early high-risk relationships affect children’s lives at multiple levels.
- Apresentação do Corpus de Português Língua Estrangeira/Língua Segunda – COPLE2Publication . O nosso objetivo é reforçarmos os dados que temos sobre a aprendizagem do Português como língua estrangeira (LE). Julgamos que o COPLE2 constituirá um bom recurso para professores e investigadores, uma vez que irá fornecer dados empíricos para: (i) identificar erros gerais de aprendizagem do Português L2; (ii) servir de base a manuais e a outros materiais didáticos destinados a grupos específicos de estudantes; e (iii) usar estes dados na formação de professores, tendo em conta a análise das correções dos professores.

- Collocations in Portuguese: A corpus-based approach to lexical patternsPublication . Mendes, Amália; Antunes, SandraCollocations and, more generally, multiword expressions, have been extensively studied for the English language and a large set of resources are available in terms of linguistic description and tools for language learning. On the contrary, combinatorial resources for Portuguese are scarce, although specific types of collocations, such as light verb constructions, nominal compounds and proverbs, have been the topic of many studies. This chapter reviews different theoretical perspectives on multiword expressions and collocations in Portuguese and presents in more detail the results of the COMBINA-PT project, a corpus-based approach to the study of collocations.
- COMBINA-PT: a Large Corpus-extracted and Hand-checked Lexical Database of Portuguese Multiword ExpressionsPublication . The objective of this on-going project is to compile a large lexical database of multiword (MW) units of the Portuguese language, automatically extracted from a balanced 50 million word corpus, interpreted with lexical association measures and manually validated. MW expressions considered in the database include named entities and lexical associations with different degrees of cohesion, ranging from frozen groups, which undergo little or no variation, to lexical collocations composed of words that tend to occur together and that constitute syntactic dependencies, although with a low degree of fixedness. This new resource has a two-fold objective: (i) to be an important research tool which supports the development of MW expressions typologies and their lexicographic treatment; (ii) to be of major help in developing and evaluating language processing tools able of dealing with MW expressions
- Corpus-based extraction and identification of Portuguese Multiword ExpressionsPublication . Antunes, Sandra; Nascimento, Maria Fernanda Bacelar do; Casteleiro, João Miguel; Mendes, Amália; Pereira, Luísa; Sá, TiagoThis presentation reports the methodology followed and the results attained on an on-going project aiming at building a large lexical database of corpus-extracted multiword (MW) expressions for the Portuguese language. MW expressions were automatically extracted from a balanced 50 million word corpus compiled for this project, furthermore statistically interpreted using lexical association measures and are undergoing a manual validation process. The lexical database covers different types of MW expressions, from named entities to lexical associations with different degrees of cohesion, ranging from totally frozen idioms to favoured co-occurring forms, like collocations. We aim to achieve two main objectives with this resource: to build on the large set of data of different types of MW expressions to revise existing typologies of collocations and to integrate them in a larger theory of MW units; to use the extensive hand-checked data as training data to evaluate existing statistical lexical association measures.
- CQPWeb: Uma nova plataforma de pesquisa para o CRPCPublication . Mendes, Amália; Généreux, Michel; Hendrickx, Iris; Pereira, Luísa; Bacelar do Nascimento, Maria Fernanda; Antunes, SandraWe present a newly available online resource for Portuguese, a new version of the Reference Corpus of Contemporary Portuguese, now searchable via a user-friendly web interface. We report on work carried out on the corpus previous to its publication online, namely how the corpus was built, our choice of metadata and the processes and tools involved for the cleaning, preparation and annotation to make the corpus suitable for linguistic inquiries. We also describe the web platform and resume the extensive search options available for linguistic or NLP studies.
