Introduction: The pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus began in 2020 and was responsible for thousands of deaths worldwide, also leaving several physical sequelae in infected patients. Faced with an unknown and unpredictable situation, many measures were taken to protect the population. If these measures allowed the control of the epidemiological situation, it is certain that, in general, the mental health of the population was greatly affected, with university students constituting a particularly vulnerable group to the changes imposed by the pandemic. Objectives: The aim of this work is to carry out a narrative review to investigate the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the mental health of university students. Methods: A search was conducted with the terms “SARS CoV 2”, “pandemic”, “mental health”, "university students” at PubMed. 41 relevant articles in English published between 2020 and 2022 were selected. Results: There was an increase in the prevalence of psychological illnesses among university students, namely anxiety, depression and insomnia. Conclusion: The findings are alarming and require further investigation in order to understand the long-term mental sequelae. University students are an essential pillar of society and may have their future seriously compromised due to the times they are living. Thus, it is important to invest in mental health prevention and promotion strategies and to provide adequate psychological support in order to reduce sequelae.
