Homosexuality is a phenomenon of universal scope and is not limited to a particular period of time nor a determined territory. This dissertation aims to conduct a comparative study of the homosexual population in Brazil and China. From a historical dimension, the existence of homosexual population has become evident whenever society allows greater freedom of expression, both in Brazil and China. It is important to emphasise that the homosexual movement in both countries developed under unfavourable circumstances, as certain aspects, particularly religion in Brazil, affect the attitudes of the Brazilian people towards homosexuals, leading to several homophobic occurrences. In China, on the other hand, the ideology of the historical Confucian roots ("Filial Piety", "Courtesy" and "Moderation") gains more ground in the lives of Chinese people, and has become an element against the public presence of homosexuality among Chinese. In addition to a brief reflection on the discursive production of professional authors concerning this area, this work also aims to analyse another factor, namely the media that, in these two countries, has made homosexuality less subject to discrimination than before. This comparative work shows that, although the two countries are very different in many aspects, there are similarities in term of the homosexual people making their voices heard and their desire for full participation in social life.
