As part of the Master in Translation, this project aims to present a proposal of the full translation of the book Con y sin nostalgia, an ensemble of tales written by the Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti (edited in 1977), and a report which aims to focus on the main difficulties found throughout the translation process, exposing the reflections and the options taken. As we are dealing with a literary work, this translation has involved additional challenges, in order to respect the original text and the author's style. The proximity of the Portuguese and Spanish languages – and, inside the last one, the Spanish-American variant of the Rio de la Plata region – and the abundance of orality marks, regionalisms and slang also required the translator extra attention. The ironic tone that characterizes Benedetti’s brilliant way of saying was also considered. The thematic points of the report, supported by some theoretical principles, intend to testify the desirable balance between the form and the meaning found in the source text (according to our personal and subjective reading) and those that are left to the possible target text reader.
