A Síndrome Burnout foi definida pela primeira vez por Freudenberger em 1974, como a exaustão física e mental fruto do stress ocupacional. Mais tarde, em 2001, Maslach, Schaufeil e Leiter definiram-na como uma síndrome com três dimensões principais: a Exaustão Emocional, a Despersonalização e a Falta de Realização Pessoal no Trabalho. A Síndrome de Burnout é um problema de saúde prevalente e de extrema relevância no quotidiano dos profissionais de saúde, tendo um forte impacto na saúde física e mental dos mesmos, na qualidade de vida, na qualidade dos serviços de saúde prestados e na produtividade laboral e económica. Esta tese constitui uma revisão selectiva da literatura sobre as intervenções utilizadas pelas instituições de saúde para prevenção e intervenção na Síndrome de Burnout.

Later, in 2001, Maslach, Schaufeil e Leiter defined it as a syndrome with three main dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment at the workplace. The Burnout Syndrome is a prevalent health problem and of extreme importance in the healthcare professionals’ day-to-day life, having a strong impact on their physical and mental health, in their quality of life, in their ability to provide adequate healthcare services and in their labor and economical productivity. This thesis constitutes a selective literary review about the interventions used by the health institutions to prevent and intervene in the Burnout Syndrome.
