Abstract(s)
Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one of the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorders in the world, afflicting tens of millions of people. The disease can be of several subtypes, hence having a big variety of clinical manifestations. However, we are still not close to completely understanding the pathophysiology of this syndrome, its connection to genetic factors or even the difference of geographical incidence and prevalence. Because there is not a cure, there is a great necessity for either the development of new pharmaceuticals or the execution of clinical trials with already existing drugs that might have a considerable effect on the disease. Objective: To this effect, this systematic review proposes to look to the most recent knowledge and data that we have concerning the utilization of antidepressants in the treatment of this disease. Methods: In accordance with this, a research was made for articles in the electronic database PubMed, giving importance to the more recent meta-analysis and review articles about this issue. Importance was also given to the review of some key concepts about this theme. Results: In this article, it is demonstrated that the evidence around the utilization of antidepressants in this syndrome is, in general, weak, and non-consensual, there being few clinical trials the last few years to contribute to this thematic, which shows the necessity to invest in this area in order to better understand if antidepressants can be an alternative to use in this disease.
