Abstract(s)
Humanism in the health area becomes relevant to the extent that its presence or absence modifies many aspects of the clinic. With this review, it is intended to achieve a more in-depth knowledge about the scope of “humanism” and, in this way, to expose the inherent advantages of humanistic medicine - for both the patient and the caregiver. It is understood as crucial not only to understand how a low humanized practice of medicine was arrived at, but also to review alternative models of training health professionals that do not favor merely theoretical knowledge, but also empathic and moral valences. The achievement of the objectives is intended through a search for articles in the PubMed database with the intention of identifying articles referring to humanism in medicine, applying inclusion criteria (all articles found with the terms MeSH “Humanism” AND “Medicine” OR “Humanism” AND “Delivery of Health Care”, written in the last 10 years) and exclusion criteria (articles written in languages other than English and Portuguese; articles that did not directly refer to humanism in medicine; articles with summary only). It is understood the necessity to proceed to the modification of the system itself. That way, it may become possible the humanization of the healthcare professionals and an education that encourages the development of psycho-affective values beyond the theoretical ones. The coexistence of a personal and a professional life in a harmonic balance also takes great proportions within the humanization of medicine.
