A análise
Abstract: This work presents the analysis to Pedro Tamen’s translation À la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust. This kind of approach was due to the canonicity of both writers. As long as the translation was being achieved and published, different interviews to the translator took place, whereby the translator pointed out the paths he went through. Two aims are settled: one is to show how statements resulting from an empirical work can coincide with translation theories and two is to capture Pedro Tamen’s concept of translation. The mapping of his work as a translator until October 30th 2010 is followed by a bio-bibliographic comment, as well as by a few notes about Marcel Proust in Portugal. The theoretical framing was selected according to the way Tamen spoke about translation difficulties along with the interviews. Hermeneutic, functionalist, linguistic and cultural visions sustain the theoretical approach. A set of eight interviews and 542 translator notes, as paratexts, are the starting point to find out the analogy and the connection between the translator’s words and the scholars different theories and methods. The first paragraph of each volume of the romance is the basis for a translation analysis reflecting how Tamen does what he says. Without being a ‘study case’, this dissertation is a small contribution to further analysis regarding Pedro Tamen as a translator, who, as a prominent figure within the Portuguese literary scene, has dedicated his life to the letters, and to the words, and to write well in his own language.
