culinária, o dialecto (patuá) e as festividades tradicionais demonstram a base cultural
cultural.
Abstract: This Master of Arts thesis is about the Macanese, the filhos da terra (the “sons of Macau”), who descend from several generations of intermarriages between the Portuguese and Asians. The miscegenation resulted in a community with specific cultural traits. The cuisine, the dialect and the traditional festivals show us the Portuguese cultural base mixed with influences received from the neighbouring Asian countries. Macau was handed back to China in December of 1999, ending more than 400 years of Portuguese presence. Macau is presently a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and its Basic Law was written in conformity with the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration which was signed in 1987. The Basic Law guarantees the way of life and the rights the residents – including those of Portuguese descent – enjoyed before the handover. A historical background is provided for a better understanding of this community, from its beginning until today, and the new challenges it is facing, as well as its important cultural legacy, are identified.
