Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the main complications associated with diabetes mellitus, with an annual incidence of approximately 1-4%, and 25% of diabetic patients will suffer from this complication throughout the course of their disease. The main mechanisms associated with its onset are diabetic neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease, and because of their relevance in terms of comorbidities this work will only address peripheral arterial disease. The diagnosis of this pathology should be performed as early as possible through a well-designed history and objective examination so that directed therapy can be instituted as soon as possible, with major amputation being one of the major problems associated with this type of ulcer. Diabetic foot ulcer requires a multidisciplinary approach in the attempt of a more holistic treatment, reducing the need to resort to the health system and hospitalization, which entail high costs, both direct and indirect.
