A “Lusofonia” é um conceito plurissignificativo e encerra um ou vários projetos de posicionamento geoestratégico dos países de língua oficial portuguesa e/ou que têm o português como parte do seu património linguístico. Apesar deste conceito recente significar essencialmente (ou melhor, oficialmente) o projeto político de afirmação de uma comunidade linguística com dimensão importante no jogo de forças das línguas a nível planetário, ele tem atrás de si um determinado ideal de universalidade configurado no quadro da expansão moderna de Portugal como reino cristão europeu. Partindo do debate em torno do(s) conceito(s) e do(s) projeto(s) de Lusofonia, procuraremos perscrutar as suas raízes míticas e utópicas patentes em projetos antigos de reorganização do mundo, nomeadamente o ideal do Quinto Império e as suas metamorfoses no decurso da história das ideias em Portugal. Procuraremos analisar criticamente de que modo alguns elementos do arsenal mítico e utópico de modelo de reorganização, sob égide lusófona, de um mundo globalizado se decalca, reinterpreta e atualiza no projeto de comunidade lusófona e/ou em projetos de mediação global de que a língua portuguesa seria instrumento.
“Lusophony” is a multi-significant concept, containing one or various geostrategic positioning projects from the countries of official Portuguese language and/or with Portuguese as part of their linguistic patrimony. Although this recent concept signifies essentially (or rather, officially) the political project of a linguistic community affirmation with an important dimension in the languages’ games of power at a planetary level, it has behind it a certain ideal of universality, configured in the frame of Portugal’s modern expansion as a European Christian kingdom. Departing from the discussion around Lusophony concept(s) and project(s), we will try to peer its mythical and utopic roots, exhibited in ancient projects of reorganization of the world, namely the ideal of Fifth Empire and its metamorphosis in the course of Portugal’s History of Ideas. We will seek to critically analyse the way some elements of the mythical and utopic arsenal of a reorganizational model, under Lusophone aegis, of the globalized world are based on, reinterpreted and actualized in the project of a Lusophone community and/or in projects of global mediation, within which the Portuguese language would be an instrument.
