Abstract(s)
The didactic intervention presented in this paper was applied to a 10th grade Portuguese Literature class, of Escola Secundária de Camões, within the scope of supervised teaching pratice. The work Peregrinação, by Fernão Mendes Pinto was selected from module 2 of this subject’s syllabus – From the Renaissance to Pre-Romanticism – and for comparative reading purposes, the work O Murmúrio do Mundo, by Almeida Faria, for its possibilities of intertextual analysis with the previously mentioned syllabus literary work. This project aimed mainly at developing reading skills of literary texts, as studies have shown the students’ great difficulties in the fields of analytical and critical reading, even in senior high school. Thus, with a strategically-oriented approach to the works mentioned, we aim at presenting a didactic proposal which will contribute to develop the students’ reading comprehension skills. The intervention was developed in two distinct stages, throughout six ninety-minute classes: the first stage corresponded to reading excerpts of Peregrinação, oriented by work scripts; and the second to discussing and reflecting on intertextual relationships between the work from the syllabus and O Murmúrio do Mundo. This approach contemplated differenciated activities, such as group work, reading worksheets, and writing tasks, so as to assess the reading comprehension of studied texts from different elements. Results prove the students’ reading difficulties, especially of texts which are not contemporary, and which, therefore, do not present a syntactic structure nor a lexicon familiar to them, thus corroborating the idea that explicit teaching of reading comprehension strategies is of great interest and importance.
