Esbatendo o tabu: estratégias de tradução para legendagem em Portugal

Esta dissertação de mestrado propõe-se estudar a tradução para legendagem no contexto
audiovisual português, tomando por objecto de estudo a linguagem tabu. Elaboramos uma
análise sistemática do objecto de estudo, com vista a identificar estratégias tradutórias de
linguagem tabu na tradução para legendagem que permitam a formulação de normas de
tradução no contexto português. Compreendendo que a tradução para legendagem não
deve ser estudada de um ponto de vista estritamente linguístico mas também sociocultural,
propomo-nos analisar as estratégias encontradas enquanto factos da cultura de chegada.
Com o propósito de analisar comparativamente textos de partida audiovisuais e textos de
chegada de tradução para legendagem, procedeu-se à criação de um corpus paralelo e
alinhado dos filmes Goodfellas - Tudo Bons Rapazes, Analyze This - Uma questão de
nervos e Snatch - Snatch-Porcos e Diamantes, possibilitando a análise comparativa de
textos de partida e textos de chegada.
Tomando como ponto de partida o facto de a inserção de linguagem tabu no diálogo
audiovisual não ser desprovida de significação extralinguística, procuramos compreender,
através da análise quantitativa e qualitativa do corpus, a possível reprodução de valores
sócio-semióticos de prestígio ou de marginalidade nos textos de chegada.
Acrescentamos uma descrição contextual da realidade portuguesa do século XX, no que
respeita aos meios de comunicação, de forma a tentar perceber a mediação de variáveis
interlinguísticas e interculturais, bem como os factores do contexto de recepção que
poderão ter influenciado a formação e manutenção do discurso da legendagem em
Portugal, como sejam as questões de censura e autocensura e as motivações ideológicas
que lhe podem estar subjacentes.
This dissertation is focused on analysing the translation and subtitling of taboo words, within the Portuguese audiovisual context. Our goal is to elaborate a systematic analysis of the study object, in order to identify translation strategies concerning the translation of taboo and also to make suppositions about translation norms in the Portuguese context. Subtitling should not be studied from a linguistic point of view only, rather in its sociocultural aspects, so we intend to analyze the strategies as a fact of the target culture. We elaborated a parallel corpus composed by the audiovisual texts of three foreign movies and their subtitling into Portuguese (Goodfellas - Tudo Bons Rapazes, Analyze This - Uma questão de nervos e Snatch - Snatch-Porcos e Diamantes), with the purpose of identifying the similarities and dissimilarities between the source texts and the target texts. The incorporation of taboo in audiovisual dialogue is compelled by extra linguistic purposes, so we intend to understand the reproduction of communicative meanings and socio-semiotic values of power and prestige or marginality in the target texts. In addition we add a contextual description of the Portuguese context in the 20th century, as far as the means of communication are concerned, so as to try to understand the mediation of inter-linguistic and intercultural variables, as well as the specific characteristics of the context of reception that might have influenced the formation and maintenance of subtitling discourse in Portugal, such as censorship, self-censorship and ideological motivations.
