Abstract(s)
do turismo.
ABSTRACT: After the 1970s, the concept of museum underwent a big revolution - museums were no longer referred to as conservative and elitist places, where static exhibitions were held for the upper classes. Having now a relevant role in the cultural, social, economic, tourist and urban evolution of many cities, museums became a place of flexible environments, where it was possible to explore new relationships between Man and reality. In Tomar, a city of about 19,000 inhabitants located in the interior of Portugal, there is a vast historical, cultural, archaeological and anthropological wealth. After a few troubled years of development, Tomar eventually grew due to the rise of tourism. Mainly known for the Templar occupation, this city has signs of prior occupation by various civilizations. This work proposes a requalification of a specific area near the Nabão river (between the historic center and the new metropolitan area) through the rehabilitation of the Santa Iria’s Convent, the Former Female College, and the Nuns’ Arc, which creates a connection between the two buildings. After this area suffered major change due to being used for varied and diverse purposes that drastically reduced its characterisation, the buildings remained abandoned for about 30 years. This project proposes a new museological program in a forgotten place that is indeed full of history, based on new museology ideals. An archeology history museum of Tomar - supported by leisure, exhibition and dissemination areas - aims to bring back life to this place and add value to these buildings in the urban and riverside landscape of the city, as well as to the lives of its residents and visitors.
