ABSTRACT: The following work aims to investigate the values of heritage and cultural legacy and discover its role in contemporary architecture and in the communities that we live in today. To that avail, we explored the concept of heritage in architecture as a time capsule, equating the building to a tool that lets us explore history itself. The ‘vehicle’ that we chose to do this conceptual voyage in was the monastery of S. José de Ribamar, a convent from the Order of St. Francis, dating from the mid-sixteenth century and located in the town of Algés. The building has suffered countless renovations throughout it’s history but is now mostly abandoned. For this reason, the building is the perfect platform to study the concepts of historical value, heritage, legacy and time vehicle. Its many changes (that ended up turning the convent into a palace) allow us to also explore the concept of palimpsest in architecture, studying the various layers of history that overlay on top of one another and make up the product that we know today. Once we have studied these concepts as well as the past of the monastery – a collection of knowledge that we have considered to be paramount to the operation of architecture in the situation of a pre-existing building – we can also explore strategies of rehabilitation in the context of architecture, using techniques such as rehabilitation, reconstruction and also construction of new structures that contribute to the requalification of this cultural heritage and its contextualization in the modern city. With this we aim to revive a structure that was once important and that has now, with the pass of time and the change of ways, lost its relevance and present it to the population so that they can once again enjoy its space. Thus, this thesis is motivated by the exploration of cultural and architectural heritage, and simultaneously, the enhancement and further development of the skill in design of architecture acquired throughout the academic journey.
