Abstract(s)
This dissertation/study aims to analyze the military aspect of Julius Caesar's life, duly contextualized in his political career and contemporary Roman society. The first chapter examines certain aspects of his personal life and his cursus honorum, linking his political rise to his military command. It includes the two major conflicts that defined his life: the Gallic War and the Civil War. The second chapter offers an overview of Julius Caesar's military actions at the command level, focusing on logistical organization and the ability to ensure supplies. It addresses the logistics administration during the Roman Republican period, followed by a description of how Caesar provided food and fodder for his army during campaigns (including the collection of water and firewood). This is followed by an analysis of the main supply lines and bases employed, the transport and logistical infrastructures that supported the war and logistical actions during siege warfare. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the importance of military intelligence for the efficient operation of logistical fronts. The third chapter delves into key aspects of intermediate command in Caesar's army, focusing on the role of centurions and their contribution to Rome's military success. It begins with a conventional overview of the Roman army during Caesar's era, highlighting the role of centurions within its military organization. It then explores Caesar’s own recognition of the value of centurions, followed by an analysis of their discipline, courage, and function in middle command. Lastly, it emphasizes the high mortality rates associated with their hazardous military duties.
