Na primeira metade do Século XIX a Armada Portuguesa perdeu mais de dois terços da sua força efectiva. Sendo a ruína económica trazida pelas Invasões Francesas e pela perda do comércio do Brasil apontada como o principal motivo para esta decadência, é certo que vários outros factores políticos, estratégicos, sociais e organizacionais devam ser tidos em conta. Justifica-se, assim, uma análise mais detalhada sobre a Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa como organização e sobre a sua evolução durante aquele período.
During the first half of the Ninetienth Century, the Portuguese Navy lost more than three quarters of its strength. Although economic ruin brought by the French Invasions and the loss of the Brazilian trade are considered to be the main reasons for such a decay, other political, strategic, social and organizational factors should be taken into account, thus justifying a closer look into the Portuguese naval organization and its evolution along that period.
