No caso do
What factors contribute to the decline and extinction of romantic love? What aspects should we pay heed to, if we do not want to lose that love that unites us with someone? Or, conversely, is there anything that can be done to extinguish the love felt for someone? The present study sought to understand the mechanisms behind this decline. By means of 24 interviews, it was possible to identify the main (which act on the front line) and complementary factors (which magnify the previous ones) most contributing to the collapse of romantic love. Two types of decline have been identified, which follow relatively different processes: unintentional decline - which occurs spontaneously - and intentional decline - which occurs on purpose. Among the main factors found are disillusionment, lack of commitment, lack of security and lack of intimacy. Individual growth, lack of reciprocity, disregard and – to a lesser extent – lack of passion also appeared as relevant aspects in the process of decline. In the case of intentional decline, it was the adoption of specific strategies - of which distancing stands out - that most contributed to the decline and extinction of romantic love. In both types of decline, four complementary factors were found (loss of hope, third parties, self-esteem and time), that played an essential role in triggering or consolidating the process of love decline. This enhances our understanding of the aspects involved in the decline and extinction of romantic love, the relevance of which may extend to clinical work in individual or couple therapy, when the intention is to sustain a loving connection or when love is a cause of suffering.
