De entre as publicações editadas, desde o século XIX, pela Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (CML), sobressai a Revista Municipal (RM), não só pela sua durabilidade - editou-se entre Dezembro de 1939 e Dezembro de 1973 -, como pela sua qualidade literária e gráfica, mas sobretudo como ‘produto’ de um período muito particular da história contemporânea do país: o do Estado Novo, que correspondeu a um regime político anti-democrático, anti-liberal, centralizador e autoritário. O objectivo do presente trabalho foi, pois, o de compreender o papel desempenhado pela RM de Lisboa naquele contexto, fixando-se nos primeiros vinte anos de edição: 1939 a 1959. São provavelmente os anos mais ricos e mais fortes do ponto de vista dos conteúdos e da divergência esporádica em relação ao discurso oficial. Mas também onde mais facilmente se capta a evolução registada pela publicação, em função do critério definido: o tempo das presidências da CML.
Among the publications published by the Lisbon Municipal Council (LMC), since the 19th century, Revista Municipal (RM) stands out, not only due to its longevity – it was published between December 1939 and December 1973 –, but also due to its literary and graphic quality. Yet, it is specially distinctive as a “product” of a particular period of the Portuguese contemporary history, that of the Estado Novo [New State], an autocratic, centralizer, anti-democratic and anti-liberal political regime. The present thesis aims to understand the role of the RM in that context, focusing on the first twenty years of its publication, from 1939 to 1959. These are, probably, the richest and most powerful years in terms of the subjects approached and the sporadic divergence from the official discourse. Also, it is during this period that one can easily grasp the evolution the magazine went through, corresponding to the defined criterion: the LMC presidencies.
