The Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology are public institutions that offer basic, professional, technological and higher education in various teaching modalities. Among the purposes, characteristics and objectives, the stimulation of applied research and the development of scientific and technological dissemination programs stand out. Being mostly financed by the federal government, science communication is relevant as a contribution to the accountability of the invested budget, monitoring, by the government and society, of research carried out and in progress, as well as for attracting potential private financing, partnerships, stakeholders and new students. The present work aimed to portray the science communication of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro, based on case study and documentary analysis methodologies and using open documents, institutional website and social networks. It was concluded that the news most published on the organization's website are extension, administration and academic news respectively, with research coming in last place with articles that do not portray the characteristics of the activities carried out. The preferred topic of all social networks is selection processes and the least priority is research. Scientific journals are electronic, freely accessible and cover different areas of knowledge, however, they lack publicity on the entity's website and social networks. Science communication events are annual and decentralized, with publication on the institutional website, social networks and extension events calendar. At the end of the work, some recommendations are presented to improve the body's science dissemination, as well as suggestions for carrying out new studies with other institutes, in order to portray science communication, a topic that is little investigated and available in the literature.
