This Master’s Final Project (TFM) for the academic year 2023/24, building upon the work initiated in the first semester in the course "Integrated Project III," aims to develop a proposal for the Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Lisbon Military Museum (MML), located in the Santa Maria Maior parish, near the Santa Apolónia station. This building, which has remained largely unchanged since the early 20th century, currently houses two programs: the Museum and the Army General Staff. The museum building and its surroundings present several issues; at the urban level, there is an excess of parking, a lack of pedestrian pathways, and ambiguity in the museum’s main entrance. Inside the building, there are programmatic shortcomings, such as the absence of shops, a cafeteria, locker areas, accessible storage spaces, rooms for temporary exhibitions, workshop areas, a multipurpose room, a need for more exhibition space, and limitations in the current museum route, which is marked by “dead ends” that disrupt the flow of the visit. Therefore, to address these key concerns and incorporate them into this proposal, it is suggested to (re)think the following: the (re)qualification of the urban surroundings to (re)connect the city with the Tagus River; the rehabilitation and restoration of the interior and courtyard of the existing MML building; and the proposal of a new complementary expansion building. Within the general themes of interiors and building rehabilitation, this work will focus on the flexibility of the proposal and the balance between continuity and contrast in the expansion (new building) and the rehabilitation of the existing structure.
