| dc.description.abstract | The use of aircraft by the Soviets in both civil and military contexts remains somewhat understudied outside the former Soviet Union, and of the several aeroplane types existent, the operation of flying boats is virtually unheard of in the West. Additionally, when not outright ignored, the narratives related to such a subject are usually riddled with inaccuracies or omissions. The main objective of this work is therefore to bring to light the development and employment of flying boats in the Soviet Union from the Russian Civil War to the end of the Second World War. Using Russian-language sources unpublished in the West, as well as literature produced by both Russian and Western authors available outside Russia, this work endeavours to expose the organisational development of the neophyte Soviet naval aviation, the reasons behind the acquisition of flying boats by the Soviet military and civilian institutions, the methods applied in the procurement of such machines, the creation process of native designs, and the employment of the final product in the context of the Second World War. The present investigation allows us to conclude that the formation of Soviet naval aviation in the Interwar Period was a complex process resulting in the creation and acquisition of flying boats of varying natures and qualities. These, in turn, went on to perform a myriad of missions in distinct roles, many of them improvised, during the Second World War, with diverse results. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | O uso de aviões pelos soviéticos em contextos civil e militar permanece relativamente pouco estudada fora da antiga União Soviética e, dos vários tipos de aeronave existente, a operação de hidroaviões de casco é virtualmente desconhecida no Ocidente. Adicionalmente, quando não totalmente ignoradas, as narrativas relacionadas com tal tema estão geralmente repletas de incorreções ou omissões. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é, pois, trazer à luz o desenvolvimento e emprego de hidroaviões de casco na União Soviética da Guerra Civil Russa até ao fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Utilizando fontes em língua russa não publicadas no Ocidente, bem como literatura produzida por autores russos e ocidentais disponível fora da Rússia, este trabalho esforça-se por expor o desenvolvimento organizacional da neófita aviação naval soviética, os motivos por detrás da aquisição de hidroaviões de casco pelas instituições civis e militares soviéticas, os métodos aplicados no aprovisionamento de tais máquinas, o processo criativo de desenhos nativos, e o emprego do produto final no contexto da Segunda Guerra Mundial. A presente investigação permite-nos concluir que a formação da aviação naval soviética no Período Entreguerras foi um processo complexo resultando na criação e aquisição de hidroaviões de casco de variadas naturezas e qualidades. Estes, por sua vez, realizaram uma miríade de missões em papéis distintos, muitos deles improvisados, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, com resultados diversos. | pt_PT |
