This dissertation aims to understand how the gender pay gap, still such an intrinsic problem in the labour market, differs among five European Union countries, each of which has its own cultural and economic reality. The literature review seeks to segment the Gender Pay Gap into three dimensions: legal, sociological and economic, in order to interpret how this problem manifests itself, its causes and origins in different dimensions, explore the roles of social actors to combat it, and seek to understand the asymmetries in the private and public sectors. Therefore, in a comparative study between the chosen countries, the level of qualification, the active population is compared between men and women, where the types of work contract are analysed, among other indicators: full time and part time, with the purpose of exposing the representativity of women in the different valences of the labour market. Also in the dissertation's methodology, the Gender Pay Gap indicator observed in each country is examined, looking at a finer disaggregation of the same, through the disparities experienced between the private and public sectors, and also a finer sectoral analysis, encompassing the economic activities of reference. The focus is on ascertaining the asymmetry and intensity with which, depending on the country, the Gender Pay Gap occurs in disparate areas. Finally, in the last chapter, a brief characterization of the public policies adopted by the European Union in recent years, their assumptions and actions to combat the inequalities still present in the labour market, is presented.
