A presente dissertação prende-se com o desenvolvimento duma investigação
centrada na relação dos jovens portugueses com a única instituição da União Europeia
eleita por sufrágio universal direto, o Parlamento Europeu.
Começando por ser uma das instituições europeias mais desprovidas de poder, o
Parlamento Europeu tem vindo a afirmar-se enquanto instituição legislativa no seio da
União Europeia, aumentando os seus poderes e autoridade política com a aprovação dos
vários Tratados. Todavia, a introdução de eleições diretas não veio colmatar o défice
democrático europeu, afirmando-o. Representando os jovens europeus um papel crucial
na continuidade do projeto europeu, revela-se importante compreender o conhecimento
que os jovens portugueses têm acerca da casa da democracia europeia, bem como,
entender se este conhecimento os conduz a um maior envolvimento nas iniciativas
políticas europeias e a uma maior participação eleitoral.
Analisando o caso português, com base em inquéritos, conclui-se que os jovens
reconhecem o valor do Parlamento Europeu, tendo, porém, um conhecimento ainda
insuficiente acerca da instituição. São os jovens que nutrem conhecimentos mais
aprofundados e com maiores níveis de escolaridade que mais votam e mais participam
nas iniciativas do Parlamento Europeu.
This research is related to the development of a study centered on the relationship between the Portuguese youth and the only European institution elected by direct universal suffrage, the European Parliament. Historically, being the weaker house of the European legislative system, the European Parliament has increased its legislative powers and political authority through the approval of the Treaties. Nonetheless, the introduction of European elections has not improved the democratic deficit. As young Europeans play a crucial role in the continuity of the European project, it is important to comprehend the knowledge of the Portuguese youth about the European Parliament, as well as whether this knowledge leads the youth to a greater involvement in European political initiatives and electoral participation. An analysis of the Portuguese case, based on surveys, shows that young Portuguese people recognize the value of the European Parliament, but their knowledge of the institution is still insufficient. It is young people with more in-depth knowledge and with higher levels of education who vote and participate in European Parliament initiatives the most.
