The gender (in)equality that still persists in the work-family spheres, the interrelation between both areas and the impact the imbalance in one of these parts can cause in the other, are main reasons for this work. The goal is to acquire evidences to provide suggestions for actions on work-family balance and parenthood protection through a diagnostic and action plan for the internship hosting company of the fast food sector in Portugal. To accomplish this purpose, the present thesis is based on relevant theory and existing literature, analyzing the application of work-family balance and parenthood protection in the above cited company. The outcomes may be applied to the corporate context in the fast food sector - of the country of study, with relevance to other countries – aiming to identify and leverage corporate measures that surpass fulfilling the legal requirement in the gender equality and parenthood protection in the work-family areas. The methodological framework applied is mixed - quantitative and qualitative, and is executed in three stages: 1) The phase of collection of the data - diagnostic and self-evaluation; 2) data analysis; and 3) development of the action plan that is underpinned in the presuppositions of the research-action (“investigação-acção”) methodology. Starting from a diagnostic and self-evaluation of the hosting organization, grounded on learnings of theoretical background and pre-defined tools for the promotion of work-family balance and parenthood protection, in addition to deepening the knowledge on the characteristics of fast food restaurants in Portugal and (because this work was developed as a curricular internship) of a greater familiarization with the reality of the hosting company and the sector, a set of measures was suggested for the action plan with the purpose of promoting better work-family balance and parenthood protection and an organizational change. It is observed that there is a trend of an increasing central role granted to corporate social responsibility. As of this trend, this thesis spots the key role of the HRM area as an anchor element for the execution of corporate social responsibility and for the integration between government agents through commissions and public policies, aiming to advise managers and organizations towards the understanding of the needs and providing quality of life for employees.
