Professor Mauricio de Almeida Abreu, Brazil’s leading historical geographer, passed away in Rio de Janeiro on 9 June 2011 at the age of 62. Over the course of more than four decades dedicated to academic research and applied geography, Abreu proved to be one of the most original and wide-ranging Brazilian geographers of his generation. A multifaceted intellectual, he specialised in urban geography and historical geography, with an emphasis on studies of the morphological reconstitution and the social history of Rio de Janeiro over the last five centuries.
