ABSTRACT: The human being has created, throughout his existence on earth, technological objects that have helped him survive in a hostile world. Some of them are prosthetic devices and have enhanced or substituted natural skills, being part of the mythological and artistic imaginary. However, the body has never felt such need to open itself to external objects and connections as it does nowadays, after a burst of technological development. This dissertation aims at analysing this new condition of the body through the work of Stelarc, an artist who develops projects that are representative of the posthuman approach to the human being.
