Abstract(s)
Prejudice has been seen in society for thousands of years and this attitude can still be seen today throughout Europe and directed at immigrants living on the continent. Empathy can narrow the psychological distance between the agents of prejudice and their targets, resulting in improvements in relationships between social groups. Through a mixed methodology, interventionist and non-interventionist with a qualitative basis, this investigation sought to study the role of interaction design, combined with immigrant narratives, in the development of an expository-interactive tool to stimulate empathy for immigrants. The results of the empathy test performed after the development of a web documentary suggested a positive effect of the interaction design in stimulating empathy for immigrants. To reach this result, exploratory research was carried out, using a UX and UCD methodology, involving the themes that surround the interaction design, as well as the issues addressed. In preliminary studies, it was possible to discover projects that also shared the objective of promoting empathy, understanding their approaches, strengths and weaknesses. In view of the possibilities of working with the theme, the second phase began, using user-centered design methods to defi ne an audience scope and understand its characteristics and motivations. Based on the results obtained, an interactive-exhibition artifact was created, with which, it was expected to be possible the simulation, in the target audience young European university adults of empathy for immigrants who live on their continent. The verifi cation was carried out through an experimental research that used a control group (which had no contact with the web documentary) and an experimental group (which had contact with the stimuli). The results show that the experimental group showed a higher level of empathy for immigrants of the same nationality than the character in the web documentary.
