Abstract(s)
The historic center of the city of Santarém, bears the issue regarding its vacancy and, consequently, devaluation of the heritage, which is reflected in the state of degradation in which the buildings are found. A critical look is needed in view of the situation of degradation and abandonment in which much of our built heritage finds itself. This work sought to respond to this need, giving greater concern to the identity of places and heritage. This Master’s Final Project proposes its enhancement, requalification, and rehabilitation, focusing on the Old Practical School of Cavalry (EPC), in Santarém, with a view to re-empowering the place and enhancing the “equestrian world” in the city. Through several studies and analyzes it became necessary to renovate the facilities to make the EPC a reference equestrian center, with the necessary conditions for sports practice, both at an initial and professional level. Also, an Urban Park was proposed for the adjacent area to requalify the space and open it up to the population. What is sought is to understand the uses of this place, enhance them, transform them, and create something new through them. Finally, an equestrian center is not a closed system, it interacts with the landscape in which it operates. It also matters at what level and how some of these intentions are processed, because they, whether discreet or obvious, exist and the project considers them as a working tool.
