Abstract(s)
Vocational Guidance is a service that helps students and adults to choose a professional path or a higher education course, where the options related to them and their characteristics and abilities are identified. This service underlies the study of human behavior and development (Development and Learning Center – SEI, n.d.). This Master’s dissertation focuses on Vocational Guidance for high school or professional course students, more specifically the role of Communication Design in this area, and how it can help in the process of choosing a career path. Students from the 10th to the 12th year of schooling or professional courses have a great difficulty choosing a higher education course. According to a study conducted by DGEEC (General Directorate of Education and Science Statistics, 2018), 11% of the students who entered higher education in the academic year 2011/2012, three years later, in 2014/2015, changed the course they attended . Several factors can be the cause of these numbers, and anxiety disorders together with the fear of choice are two of them, which can cause students to make choices under pressure and uncertainty. This final Master’s project aims to combine Communication Design with the Vocational Guidance present in secondary and professional schools, in order to intervene in an innovative way and create a service based on self-knowledge, that can reduce stress and anxiety caused by the various resources used in the choice process and admission to a higher education. For this process were used qualitative non-interventionist and interventionist methodologies, with a qualitative basis. Surveys and interviews to students and professionals working in the field as a qualitative and quantitative interventionist methodology were made, as well as case studies to already existing services, active investigation through the project and, finally, the use of a panel of experts. It was possible to create a service that can help young people in high school or in professional schools to better understand their professional vocation, through an approach based on an exclusive follow-up of each student along with the use of self-knowledge. This method manages to facilitate the decision-making process and that can reduce anxiety rates in young people for attending the wrong course.
