Resumo(s)

The casting technique, that is closely related to the creation of sculpture, has in this study a role of greater importance. In the present dissertation is discussed some artistic casting processes, a low explored topic, with a literature scarce and scattered, that presents a multiples processes in a systematic way, which may assist in the execution of sculptural projects where the sculptor intends to use this technology, such as the technique of sand, green sand and sand with sodium silicate, and the technique of lost wax, Italian block method and ceramic shell method. This study will also aim to create topics for art reflection, in order to perpetuate technical knowledge that have been abandoned, presenting the traditional techniques that may be suitable for thoughts and contemporary aesthetic, preventing this technology, fundamental in the history of sculpture, to be lost for lack of knowledge. The equestrian statue, closely linked to the bronze technique, was also discussed, without forget the statue of King Joseph I, modeled by Machado de Castro, that was, during a period of time, the only monument of this kind in Portugal. This statue was also a milestone in the history of bronze foundry in our country
