ABSTRACT: The Santana hill is one of the seven historic hills in the city of Lisbon. From its rural past, to the edification of its convents and palaces mapped out by fences, and to its various plans to expand the city, this hill has suffered a very peculiar and strong appropriation in Lisbon. One can only understand its present by learning how the different construction forms of its urban fabric occurred, through its main topographical features, its valley and ridge lines, and its slopes, which were primarily suitable to the distinctive customs and traditions of the city, leading to names like “Corredoura”, “Carreira dos Cavalos”, or “Campo do Curral”. This hill has always played an important role in the city of Lisbon, be it an entry path, a religious place, or an significant hospital center. Here is where many gathering places and big roads are located. It was a forerunner in new means of mobility, social habits, and expansion plans to the center of Lisbon. However, regardless of its growth, it has conserved some unique and interesting places, which stand today before us as genuine invigorating spots of the historic city center. One of those spots is located in the west slope of Santana hill, and through the knowledge of its origins, memories, and features, it becomes necessary to create a urban and architectonic proposal that upgrades and integrates this space with the city, promoting its strong occupancy and usage, protecting and restoring its memory, and always keeping a permanent relation with its surroundings, so that it imposes itself in the image development of the city and the hill.
