A avaliação do volume é um parâmetro importante na avaliação ecográfica da próstata,
uma vez que as doenças que afetam esta glândula resultam geralmente em aumento do
mesmo. Contudo, existem poucos estudos que abordem o volume da próstata em cães
orquiectomizados.
Este estudo visa ampliar o conhecimento relativo ao volume prostático em cães
gonadectomizados, ao avaliar alguns dos fatores que o influenciam, bem como influenciam a
redução percentual do volume desta glândula após a orquiectomia.
Foram incluídos 62 cães submetidos a ecografia abdominal por razões não
relacionadas com o trato genitourinário, tendo sido registadas as dimensões prostáticas para
posterior cálculo do volume deste órgão. Recolheram-se também alguns dados relativos a
estes animais (idade, idade à castração, tempo decorrido desde a orquiectomia, peso e motivo
de castração) para que pudessem ser relacionados com o volume prostático.
Os resultados obtidos permitem afirmar que o volume prostático nos animais
submetidos a orquiectomia é bastante inferior ao dos cães inteiros, que as variáveis peso e
idade à castração apresentam uma correlação significativa com o volume prostático, que a
redução percentual do volume da próstata após a orquiectomia é da ordem dos 82,84% e que
também esta redução está dependente destas variáveis. Com base na população em estudo
foi também possível determinar fórmulas para cálculo do volume prostático normal num cão
orquiectomizado e do volume prostático máximo expectável num cão orquiectomizado
saudável.
ABSTRACT - DETERMINATION OF THE PROSTATIC VOLUME IN ORCHIECTOMIZED DOGS AND FACTORS INFLUENCING IT - Prostatic volume is an important feature in the ultrasonographic evaluation of the prostate, as diseases affecting this gland result most frequently in prostatic enlargement. Nevertheless, there are very few studies regarding prostate volume in orchiectomized dogs. This study aims to expand the knowledge about prostatic volume in neutered dogs by studying some of the factors that influence that volume as well as the percentual reduction in the glands volume after gonadectom. Sixty-two dogs submitted to abdominal ultrasound for reasons non related to the genitourinary tract were included. During the ultrasound, prostatic measurements were taken to then determine the volume of the organ. Some patient data (age, age at neutering, elapsed time since orchiectomy, weight and gonadectomy motive) were registered so that, after statistical analysis, their relationship with prostatic volume could be studied. The results show that prostatic volume in animals submitted to orchiectomy is undoubtedly inferior to that of intact dogs, that the variables weight and age at neutering have a significant correlation with prostatic volume, that the percentual reduction in prostate size after gonadectomy is about 82.84% and that this reduction is also related to these two variables. Considering the study population it was possible to determine formulas to calculate the normal prostatic volume of an orchiectomized dog and the maximum expected prostatic volume in a healthy gonadectomized dog.
