Abstract(s)
The development of romantic relationships in young adults appears to be influenced by their parents. In a general way, literature points the interparental conflict, more than the marital status of the parents, as having a determinant role in the way that youngsters will establish and maintain satisfactory relationships with their romantic partners. This study has the main goal to analyze the connection between the interparental conflict perceived by young adults and the romantic relationships variables (relationship satisfaction and commitment and trust in partners). It is also intended to determine differences in the perception of interparental conflict and the romantic relationship variables in terms of gender and marital status of parents. It was obtained a sample of 193 young adults from both genders with ages between 18 and 25 years old involved in a romantic relationship without living with the partner. The results reveal significant relations between the romantic relationships variables in the romantic relationship of the subjects. The interparental conflict is associated negatively and significantly with the satisfaction and trust in partners but not with the commitment. There are also significant differences in the perception of interparental conflict as to the marital status of the parents, and the subjects whose parents are divorced / separated indicate higher levels of conflict. As for gender, the data reveal no significant differences in the variables studied. There are presented some implications for clinical practice and suggestions for future research.
