ABSTRACT - Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative joint disease, classified as non-inflammatory, but with a local inflammatory component. It can occur in any dog, but it is usually associated with risk factors that predispose to its appearance, such as old age, large breeds, obesity or the presence of other joint diseases. Early diagnosis is essential and is based on risk factors, signs and imaging. There is no effective cure, but it is possible to control the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease through multimodal treatment. In this study, the Canine Osteoarthritis Staging Tool (COAST) protocol was tested in 6 cases of dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis. The final stage was obtained through the evaluation of various parameters that included a survey carried out to the owners, in this case the Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs (LOAD) was used, discomfort presented by the animal, static posture, motion, pain upon manipulation, passive range of motion and radiographic signs. The values obtained in the parameters were also compared with each other. The results obtained, showed that the majority of cases were already in an advanced stage of osteoarthritis, although, they obtained different values in the various parameters, which confirms that there is no proportional relation between the signs of osteoarthritis and between the clinical presentation and the evolution of the disease. In addition, dogs with different clinical presentations, obtained the same final stage of osteoarthritis.
