This dissertation aims to study the design museum’s role in the preservation of folk culture. The objective is to reflect on the importance of a museum dedicated to design in the preservation of cultural heritage, especifically of folk culture in contemporary society, particularly of objects, artefacts and also immaterial heritage, and on its pertinence to design and the artistic expressions. For that, we considered MUDE - Museu do Design e da Moda, Colecção Francisco Capelo as a case study, its mission and objectives as a design museum, its program and exhibitions that relate more directly with folk culture and its role in public awareness of these issues and also the exhibition 21st Century Rural Museum, its mission, concept and objectives. The relationship that the museum intends to create with folk culture opens the field of the discipline of design and makes us wonder about its current definition and action through themes presented such as: the importance of food, in the exhibition Seeds. Capital Value; or artefacts adapted by those who sought to create really useful objects, in the exhibition Treasures of Feira da Ladra; or the use of traditional materials, in the exhibition Linde Burkhardt. Routes; or the problem of desertification and the seek to recover the economies in inland communities, in the exhibition 21st Century Rural Museum; or even the relationship with vulnerable communities, in the exhibition Bip Zip. It was with this objective that we set out to reflect on the various types of objects that tell the evolution of mankind in society, both objects made from a perspective of industrial production and with a craft and creative perspective. The relationship between design and traditions and folk culture is discussed in the specific field of museums since our goal is to understand how objects and traditions can be created, displayed and understood in a relationship between the past and the present, that is, how the material or immaterial heritage can be preserved within a contemporary culture and made known in a lively waypor
