The Anti-Futurism of Solarpunk: Development of a Figurative and Narrative Aesthetic, investigates and analyses a sub-genre of literary and graphic fiction, known for its strong beliefs in ecological action, in hopes of creating an original aesthetic that aligns with its themes and narratives. The first part is dedicated to the current definition of solarpunk, how it distinguishes itself and navigates amongst similar narrative genres. Particularly, we will be considering its relationship with the concept of utopia and work towards demystifying it, starting with the book that originated the term, its contemporary understanding and how it was built upon the social-religious myth, ending with its disassociation and recontextualization within the sub-genre. In the history of fiction, the current of solarpunk is new in comparison with other genres but its arrival was not represented by a single and characteristic piece of work. Humanity’s relationship with nature is as old as our existence but our efforts in preserving it are highly dependent on the cultural geography and time, and therefore its analysis is crucial to understand how society separated itself mentally from the ecosystem. In the occident, humans have been telling stories dedicated to the appreciation of nature and other humanistic values since the end of the XVIIIth century, making Romantism a counter-culture affirmation that contrasts with the beginning of the industrial revolution, distinguishing itself as the progenitor of a new way of thinking and the start of an art movement with long standing ramifications in art, society and the eventual ecological stories of the XXth century, directly related to the birth of solarpunk This research showcases the parallelism between it and our current situation, which is on a global scale. This thematic relationship guides us to the second part, the analysis of other artistic movements, equally relevant to the birth of the subject matter, specifically Realism, Impressionism and Art-Nouveau (Modern-Style, Tiffany-Style). Each of these movements contains germinating parts that constitute solarpunk’s identity and where it stands thematic and aesthetically. The third part represents the project component of this dissertation, made up of the analysis of what we understand are the most relevant visual elements brought from Futurism, to create a new thematically opposing aesthetic. This entails its representation of movement and how it was transposed to animation and comic books/graphic novels, finishing with an understanding of what the Anti-Futuristic Solarpunk aesthetic represents and ending with its demonstration through six original illustrations.pt_PT
