Abstract(s)
This thesis aims to describe and analyze ideophones in Umbundu, the most spoken Bantu language in Angola according to the 2014 national census. Despite the existence of several studies on Umbundu, there is very little information about this class of words, which is attested in a wide range of typologically different languages, including Bantu languages, and whose study constitutes a relatively young and increasingly autonomous research domain. The starting point of this work consists of a corpus of ideophones, based on the data included in a paper by Tchimboto & Putu (2017), as well as the collection and elicitation of additional data by the author, who is a native speaker of Umbundu. The main goal is to provide a first characterization of phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and discursive properties of ideophones in this language, in order to establish criteria for their identification as a special word class. The criteria that are identified apply fully or partially to the class of ideophones, which, however, are characterized by a high degree of internal heterogeneity with respect to their grammatical and extralinguistic features. We found that the combinatorial restrictions often assigned to ideophones are not transversal to the different syntactic structures analyzed. A distinction should be made between adverbial ideophones that modify VPs and (the same) ideophones in other constructions. As in other languages, the particularity of these lexical items is also noted in morphology and phonology, since, on the one hand, they do not typically present the agreement morphology characteristic of Bantu languages and, on the other hand, they exhibit (inherent) reduplication, tonal, and prosodic processes which are often at the service of evoking imagery through the use of words.
