A zona oriental de Lisboa entrou num período de declínio e estagnação, que se faz sentir até aos dias de hoje, iniciado com o encerramento das atividades industriais localizadas no Caminho do Oriente, percurso assim designado por Deolinda Folgado e Jorge Custódio. Este percurso, compreendido entre duas grandes centralidades da cidade – Baixa Pombalina e o Parque das Nações – apresenta uma oportunidade de intervir num fragmento da cidade marcado pela forte presença industrial.
O presente exercício surge como proposta de atuação no processo de revitalização de um quarteirão industrial no qual está inserida a fábrica José Domingos Barreiro, localizada na freguesia de Marvila. O complexo de edifícios selecionados sofrerá uma reabilitação, de forma a adaptar-se às necessidades da sociedade moderna, através de um novo programa - Centro de Artes.
A proposta para a fábrica visa, através de uma abordagem de arquitetura moderna e de materiais contemporâneos, recuperar a memória de um equipamento industrial, intervindo de forma a que se estabeleçam relações intergeracionais com esta freguesia envelhecida e a transforme assim numa nova centralidade que promova uma relação de continuidade no Caminho do Oriente, unindo os dois polos atuais.
ABSTRACT: The western part of Lisbon went into a period of decay and stall, caused by the shut down of the industrial activities located in the Caminho do Oriente (Western Route), as designated by Deolinda Folgado and Jorge Custódio, that has had its effect felt up to modern days. The path that connects two main cores of the city -Baixa Pombalina and Parque das Nações- presents an opportunity to intervene in this fragment of the city, strongly shaped by the presence of its industrial heritage. The current exercise occurs with the proposition of revitalizing an entire industrial block in which is inserted the factory José Domingos Barreiro, located in Marvila. The selected group of buildings will be rehabilitated in order to adjust to modern society’s needs through a new program- Arts Center. The proposition for the factory aims, through modern architecture and contemporary techniques, to recover the memory of this industrial equipment, obsolete in current days, and to create bonds with this town that break through generational barriers. Thus, is proposed though an Arts Center in the factory José Domingos barreiro a new center point that promotes continuity in the Western Route- Caminho do Oriente- and unites the current main core points.
