Psychotria viridis Ruíz & Pavón, leaf, is a crucial element in the traditional plant-based preparation, known by the name “Ayahuasca tea”. Nowadays this preparation has been studied for its different potentially therapeutic effects, however in the available literature there is still a gap concerning botanical diagnosis of the plants that take part in the preparation. For this motive, this work attempts to do the botanical diagnose of 15 samples Psychotria viridis Ruíz & Pavón, leaf, being performed a macroscopical analysis, a microscopical analysis both through optic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, as well as microscopical quantitative and histochemical analysis in order to enable identification and quantification of useful elements for diagnosis. Additionally, it is presented the results of a study which aimed to detect the chemical constituents of the PPB possibly containing P. viridis leaves, having adapted directed extraction techniques and chemical characterization techniques through characterization techniques using Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC). All experimental work was carried out after research and compilation of bibliographic data of highest relevance available for P. viridis leaves, its preparations and constituents.
