The public space plays a key role in the composition of a city, being a place of meeting, relations, mingling, memories, opportunities, manners and ways of being, that possesses different uses and activities between diverse groups that compose the community. In this way, these environments gain a bigger importance in the urban development, thus becoming essential in its planning and propelling an increase in its inhabitants’ quality of live. This being said, the importance and prevalence which the public space takes in both the city and daily life of the citizens becomes evident, thus being imperative that the former is well taken care of, preserved and even rehabilitated if necessary, in order to maintain and improve the urban quality of life. In this context, the current project work presents a proposal of urban rehabilitation for the Jardim Interior do Quarteirão do Bairro das Portas de Mértola, located in the city of Beja, one that focuses on improving the current conditions, one that aims to rehabilitate the space, providing it with new qualities that meet the new social desires, transforming it into an area of comfort. During the work’s development, several studies of the city were carried out as well as observations and questionnaires, in order to sense the perception that the inhabitants have, not only of their city, but also of the space in question and understand the needs of each individual, in this way creating a solution that can be beneficial por everyone, especially for the city. This project is more than a process or a form of action, it is an initiative whose objective is to leave a contribution to the locality so that it may prosper in the right way as well, as an incentive for the continuation of this type of intervention
