Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - The Use of Laparoscopy in the Sterilisation of Female Cats and Dogs: Caretakers' Perspectives on the Subject - Minimally invasive surgery represents one of the most promising therapeutic modalities among current surgical technologies, with sterilization being the most widely performed laparoscopic procedure in clinical practice. Understanding the opinions of pet owners is crucial to fostering acceptance of laparoscopic sterilization in female dogs and/or cats. The objectives of this research include determining the proportion of respondents who are satisfied with the performance of laparoscopic ovariectomy in their pets, as well as identifying those who would be willing to invest in this technique for the sterilization of future animals. This study also addressed pet owners in order to identify the primary requirements and advantages that lead them to choose the laparoscopic technique. This work is based on a study conducted via an online survey. A total of 126 pet owners, clients of a veterinary hospital located in the municipality of Cascais, Portugal, whose cats and/or dogs underwent laparoscopic ovariectomy, participated in the survey. The pet owners were interviewed using an online questionnaire composed of 11 questions aimed at capturing their opinions on laparoscopic sterilization. The proportion of pet owners satisfied with laparoscopic ovariectomy was 98.4% (95% confidence interval with a margin of error of 2.2%). The same proportion was observed regarding their intention to opt for this procedure for a future pet. The incidence of complications was 2.4%, and evidence of an association between complications and dissatisfaction of the caretakers was found using Fisherās exact test (p<0.001). Regarding the main requirements and advantages that led pet owners to choose this technique, faster recovery and increased postoperative comfort were the most frequently selected factors, reported by 92% and 83% of respondents, respectively. This study concludes that pet owners demonstrated high satisfaction with the laparoscopic ovariectomy technique and would choose this method for the sterilization of a future pet. The results obtained suggest that this procedure is well accepted by pet owners, being considered an effective and satisfactory alternative, which reinforces its relevance in small animal clinical practice
