Entre a realidade e a ficção: Antígona de Sófocles, os papéis sociais das mulheres na sociedade ateniense e as figuras femininas no Teatro Ático

Este estudo pretende refletir sobre a existência de uma discrepância entre a realidade histórica
conhecida da vida das mulheres no século V a.C. e as personagens femininas da tragédia Ática.
Escrever sobre as mulheres na Grécia Antiga revela a necessidade da análise das assimetrias que
governavam as relações entre homens e mulheres na polis e da diferenciação social e sexual, no
intuito de facilitar o entendimento da estrutura sobre a qual se estabelecia o poder masculino. A
existência de uma escassez de vestígios no feminino resulta principalmente da visão da elite de
homens que administrava a cidade, os arquivos e a memória colectiva, para a qual a vida das
pessoas comuns, em particular a das mulheres, não tinha relevância no espaço público. Em
contraste, nas tragédias, que são aqui foco de estudo, verifica-se com frequência que as mulheres
participam ativamente no desenrolar da ação, parecendo transgredir aquilo que se considerava ser
o seu comportamento adequado: ao invés de silenciosas, obedientes e passivas, estas personagens
demonstram força, coragem e inteligência, atributos e ações normalmente associados aos homens.
Para além da investigação dos vários papéis desempenhados pelas mulheres nesta época, na
cidade de Atenas, e da caraterização de algumas personagens femininas de peças de teatro, este
trabalho analisa também a personagem Antígona que, na peça de Sófocles, se destaca pela sua
coragem e, por fim, examina, em contexto contemporâneo, a encenação mais recente da Antígona
de Sófocles em Portugal, que foi levada à cena em 2019 no Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.
This study intends to make a case about the existence of a discrepancy between the known historical reality of women lives in the 5th century B.C. and the female characters of the Attic tragedy. To argue about women in ancient Greece implies the necessity of an analysis on the asymmetries governing the relations between men and women in the polis and on the social and sexual differentiation, in order to allow an understanding of the structure upon which the male power was established. The existence of a female vestige scarcity mainly results from the vision of a male elite that administered the town, the archives and the collective memory, to whom the life of ordinary people, particularly women, had no relevance in the civic space. In contrast, in tragedies, which are the scope of this study, we often find women actively participating in the action unfolding, apparently transgressing what was believed to be their adequate behaviour: instead of silent, obedient and passive, these characters show strength, bravery and intelligence, attributes and actions normally associated to men. Together with investigating the various roles personified by women in ancient Athens and the description of some female characters in theatre plays, this work also explores the Antigone character, which, in the Sophocles play, transcends through courage, and, finally, it examines, in a contemporaneous context, the most recent staging of Sophocles’ Antigone in Portugal, which was brought to scene in 2019 at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.
