Endometriosis has critical implications for women’s quality of life. However, an overview of the current knowledge of this issue is still limited. It is defined as the presence of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity causing a huge diversity of symptoms, such as infertility, pelvic pain or dysmenorrhea. Despite the huge number of theories explaining the physiopathology of the process, the pathogenesis and progression of the disease are still poorly understood. Endometriosis is a disease whose progression depends on estrogen and that can be effectively cured by definitive surgery. However, prolonged medical therapy may be needed in most of the cases since conservative surgery is usually performed especially in young women. This treatment modality is often associated with only partial relief and/or recurrence of the disease as well as several side effects. The medical management of endometriosis requires a holistic and multidisciplinary approach in order to understand all the aspects involved in the human well-being. In the present review, the impact of endometriosis, as a chronic disease, in women’s lives concerning certain aspects not always valued by clinicians is approached. Up-to-date findings on the treatment of endometriosis will also be briefly summarized.
