The present study describes the project carried out as part of the Master's Dissertation in Psychomotor Rehabilitation, where we aimed to investigate the relationship that participation in extracurricular activities can have on school engagement, with a special focus on children and adolescents with atypical development. School engagement is an important factor for the academic success of all students, positively intervening in the issue of school dropout and playing a crucial role in promoting the educational and social inclusion of children and young people. The developmental context of this research took place in clusters of Schools within the Intermunicipal Community of MĂ©dio Tejo, and the participants were 62 students aged between 11 and 19 years (14.52 ± 2.078), attending both Basic and Secondary Education (from 5th to 12th grade). Regarding the methods for data collection, two questionnaires were used â one for sociodemographic characterization and the validated questionnaire for the Portuguese adolescent population on "Student Engagement in School: a Four-Dimensional Scale" developed by Professor Doctor Feliciano Veiga. The data analysis allows us to highlight a promising association between participation in extracurricular activities and the agentic dimension. For specific activities such as sports, performing arts, religious, and educational activities, varied associations were identified in terms of strength and statistical significance, emphasizing the complexity of these relationships. Interestingly, the results also indicate that participation in extracurricular activities outside of school is more strongly associated with school engagement than activities performed in the school environment.
