O sítio de Chibanes, detentor de uma posição privilegiada em termos geoestratégicos, assegura o controlo visual sobre amplas áreas da Península da Arrábida, nomeadamente os sectores vestibulares do Sado e do Tejo. Foi ocupado durante o III milénio cal BC, a II Idade do Ferro e o período romano-republicano.
Apresenta-se um breve balanço sobre a fortificação do período romano-republicano, construída sobre o povoado fortificado da II Idade do Ferro. Datada entre finais do século II e meados do século I a.C., parece corresponder a um estabelecimento militar correlacionável com o processo de conquista do Ocidente da Península Ibérica.
The site of Chibanes has a privileged position in geostrategic terms, which ensures visual control over large areas of the Arrábida Peninsula, namely the lower sections of Tagus and Sado estuaries. The site had been occupied during the 3rd millennium cal BC, in the late Iron Age and in the Roman Republican period. In this paper a brief synthesis is presented concerning the information still under study on the fortification of the late Roman Republican period. According to the archaeological data and the classical literary sources, the fortification of Chibanes, built at the end of the second century on an Iron Age oppidum and abandoned at the mid of the first century BC had been connected with the Roman conquest of the western Hispania.
