| dc.description.abstract | O presente relatório de estágio incide sobre a tradução dos contos “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” e “O Russet Witch!”, da autoria do norte-americano Francis Scott Fitzgerald, a que se procedeu no âmbito do estágio curricular realizado na Relógio d’Água Editores, no contexto do Mestrado em Tradução. Tendo por finalidade apresentar novas traduções dos referidos contos – escritos naquilo a que Fitzgerald chamou «second manner» – e de modo a reavivar o interesse pela contística fitzgeraldiana, este trabalho apresenta, numa primeira parte, uma contextualização histórica e social do autor e da sua obra, contextualização essa que se considera imprescindível para compreender devidamente a sua prosa ficcional. Na segunda parte, justifica-se as escolhas de tradução a que se procedeu, tendo por base teorias avançadas por diversos autores, nomeadamente Vinay e Dalbernet (1995), Mona Baker (2005) e Antoine Berman (1997). A exigência inerente à tradução de textos literários, bem como as dificuldades colocadas pela estilística muito particular de Fitzgerald constituem os principais desafios levantados pelas traduções em causa. Assim, no sentido de manter, tanto quanto possível, as idiossincrasias do autor no texto de chegada, não esquecendo a importância de conservar as referências culturais que tão bem espelham a época e a sociedade norte-americanas retratadas por Fitzgerald, não só nos contos em apreço, mas em toda a sua obra, prevalece – na terminologia de Vinay e Darbelnet – a estratégia de tradução direta. Resulta, portanto, uma tradução, no geral, estrangeirizante (Venuti), ainda que se recorra com alguma frequência a procedimentos de tradução que implicam uma maior aproximação aos modelos literários da língua e da cultura de chegada. Espera-se que o presente relatório e as traduções nele apresentadas contribuam para uma reflexão sobre o papel da tradução tanto na cultura, como na língua de chegada – papel que ganhou maior relevo ao nível da criação literária com o modernismo –, bem como sobre os diferentes métodos de traduzir. Espera-se ainda que evidenciem a relevância da contística fitzgeraldiana, tantas vezes esquecida em favor da sua restante prosa, promovendo-a e mantendo atualizada a obra de Fitzgerald traduzida em Portugal. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | This report regards the translation of two short stories, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “O Russet Witch!”, by the North-American author Francis Scott Fitzgerald. These translations were carried out during the traineeship at the publishing house Relógio d’Água Editores, within the framework of the Master’s Degree in Translation. Aiming at rendering new translations of the abovementioned short stories – written in a style that Fitzgerald called his «second manner» –, as well as at rekindling the readers’ interest in his short stories, the first part of this work seeks to historically and socially contextualize the author and his oeuvre, a contextualization deemed essential to fully understand Fitzgerald’s fictional prose. The second part of this work is devoted to the translation report itself, in which translation choices are justified according to theories put forward by several authors, namely Vinay and Dalbernet (1995), Mona Baker (2005) and Antoine Berman (1997). The demanding character of literary translation in itself, as well as the difficulties arising from Fitzgerald’s particular stylistics represent the main challenges posed by the translations under analysis. Therefore, in order to maintain – as much as possible – the author’s idiosyncrasies in the target text, and without overlooking the importance of preserving the cultural references mirroring the period and the society depicted by Fitzgerald, not only in the short stories in question, but also across his prose, preference was given to the strategy of direct translation, according to the terminology established by Vinay and Darbelnet. The general result is a translation in which the foreignness (Venuti) of the source text is kept in the target text, although at certain points it was also necessary to resort to translation procedures that entail a greater approximation to the literary models of the target language and culture. This work, including the translations it showcases, is therefore expected to contribute to a reflection on the role of translation both in the target culture and the target language – a role that gained prominence in modernist aesthetics –, as well as on the different methods of translating. It is also expected to emphasize the significance of Fitzgerald’s short stories, often disregarded in favor of his novels, by promoting them and updating the author’s works translated in Portugal. | pt_PT |
